On why I like pie.
I really really like pie. Many of you have no doubt heard me utter my almost ubiquitous "hmmm pie." at the mere mention of the word, or something that sounds like the word, or drunk, whatnot. But there is more to pie than that. For me, pie is a transcendental act. Its enjoyment, its consumption more than just the satisfaction of the craving (a craving is momentary; pie, is anything but for me.) Pie is not just something that fills the void. It is where we find ourselves. It is the act of being in a place of being. That is why the very best place to eat pie is at a diner. and it is always best at night, in the quiet stillness that even the busiest of late nights finds in its passive drone of conversation, clinking, buzzing, laughing, and sighing. The diner is a place that is always there, always open, perpetual in reminding you of itself.
But its consumption is more than that. The same is not true for cake. Cake holds with it indulgence, decadence. Its sugars and starches are all filling. It is to be avoided until weakness overtakes us. Pie has somehow escaped this pigeon hole. It is something altogether else. In it alone we find a place to revel in the moment and reconnect. Sitting at a bar or table, finding it out, seperating, mixing, enjoying, noticing. In it together we find each other. Laughing, consoling, being in relation, sharing, comforting, reassuring.
In the show Dead Like Me one of the characters, Rube, eats quite a bit of pie. He often shares it, or offers it in a time of need. When one of his friends sits down next to him the evening, in clear need of advice, he orders them a slice. Not cake. Not ice cream (unless of course its on pie). Pie carries with it, the whole of human connection. It is care, regard and responsibility for each other. Would anyone care to join me?

After what you did to me on camera Thursday night, you owe me a bit more than pie. But yeah, sure, pie. Sounds nice. And very "Twin Peaks." Man, I loved "Twin Peaks."
funny, i was eating pie just last night. no, not that kind, sickos. really, no. a gigantic lopsided homemade apple pie, fresh from a new jersey oven hand-delivered to manhattan. just a little sugar sparkle on the crust, grannies and fujis inside. just, just frickin amazing. and i don't like sweet things. but i did sure like me some of that pie.
yo i just had one of the best pieces of pumpkin pie yesterday. its amazing what a good piece of pie can do for a person. ohh yeah and dead like me rules. ellen muth is hot.
okay, okay, OKAY!!!! i know i already left a comment, but, BUT... hannah made this chicken pot pie yesterday. what's your take on savory pie? even better than the sweet kind, by my estimation. we cut back on the sugary b.s. to find a wonderful, meaty, delicious meal. inside a pie crust. i know. unfair, right?
I follow you Sam. Shepherd's pie is pretty rocking as well - if you'll recall, it's actually the only meal I've eaten with you in New York. The pre-eminence of pie is obvious, but meaty deliciousness? Divine.
I'm not sure what I think about the savory pie, its a really good question. I was talking about cream pies with some phil people and we decided that they were a sad attempt to get the cake people over to the pie side (especially cheese cake, which come on, is not really a cake at all). I think that savory pie originated out the same sense of care for the other and responsibility, perhaps more so, because its nutritional nature. But I think sometime the "frivolity" of fruit pie is needed as well. Conclusion: they work hand in hand my friends; hand in hand.
well, i can't believe that i'm commenting three times on one post, but this is a big deal to me. one day, man, i'm gonna have a pie party. the friggin appetizer is going to be some kind of pie, then a savory pie for the meal, and then a slice of fruit pie for dessert. not for the faint of heart. possible menu: chicken pot pie for app, shepherd's pie for entree, key lime pie dessert. yeah. hell yeah. now if only there was such a thing as skyline pie. then i'd be in heaven.
Mmmm. Skyline Pie. Two Words: Cheese Crust.
it was inevitable:
skyline pie
12 oz. cooked spaghetti (al dente)
1/2 med. onion, diced
1 small can pink beans
1 can skyline chili
8 oz. mild wisconsin cheddar, finely grated
preheat oven to 375. press spaghetti firmly into the bottom of a greased 8" round pie pan. add, in this order, chili, beans, and onions. bake in oven 20 minutes. remove from oven, spread cheese evenly over top. consume ravenously before sam comes and digs his face into it.
I knew there was one. I didn't want to say anything though...
